Lagos May Witness Up To 39,000 Coronavirus Cases – Commissioner

David Ugbabe

The Lagos State government has warned that residents must follow the governor's instructions by practicing social distancing and other preventive measures, as its mathematical modeling shows that the worst-case scenario may see cases of the Coronavirus pandemic skyrocketing to as high as 39, 000.

This was made known in a statement made available by the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi. He expressed this fear while briefing journalists at the Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja on Thursday. He said, “Our mathematical modelling shows that the worst-case scenario is that we may see up to 39,000 cases in Lagos, but if everyone practices good social distancing, the figure will be limited to 13,000.”

He lamented that the figures may seem alarming at this point, but this is just to emphasize to the Lagos community to follow instructions of the incident commander to make sure that we practice social distancing and other preventive measures.

“Looking at the same time frame from the introduction of the index case, you can see that Lagos State is not seen anywhere near what Spain, Italy and Iran are showing,” he said.

He, therefore, advised the Lagos residents to adopt social distancing as an effective measure to curb the widespread of the COVID-19.

“If we add social distancing to active contact tracing, then we will be able to bend the curve further,” he said.
