The Reward Of Integrity: The Millionaire Security Guard (Opinion)

Pearl Emmanuel

As many would say, Nigeria keeps getting more difficult to live in and the dwindling economy does nothing to alleviate the suffering of her citizens. There continues to be an increase in crime rates and the endorsement of fraud with the excuse that it is revenge for colonization of Nigeria by the whites.

Integrity is fast becoming a dying feature of the Nigerian DNA. In fact, people do not help without expecting a monetary compensation in return anymore.
This brings to mind, the story of a security guard in 2016, who worked at Oba Akran road as a security guard in the United Bank for Africa spearheaded by Tony Elumelu.

Ibrahim Mohammed Ogbonago, was going about his daily business and manning the gate when he stumbled on some foreign notes. He quickly made a mental note and decided it must belong to a customer who left in a hurry. Ibrahim hurriedly went to the manager's office to return the money. Less than 10 minutes later, a man who left in a hurry returned to the bank with complaints that the money he was issued was incomplete. He stated the figure, which was the exact amount the security guard found.

The 10,000 dollars was returned to the customer, who thanked the manager and walked out without recognising Ibrahim. Nevertheless, Ibrahim was happy because he had done the right thing. He went about his daily business until Tony Elumelu got information of the security guard's outstanding deed. He invited him to his office and thanked him specially. The guard never expected any financial appreciation for his efforts.

At the annual conference organised by the bank that year, the security guard was the star who shone bright. The Governor of Adamawa State, Alhaji Bindo Jibrilla, pledged the sum of $5,000 to the surprise of all. It didn't end there. Ibrahim also received a personal commitment of $10,000 from the Governor of Bauchi State, Alhaji Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar.

The Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who was also present at the event, said that Ibrahim's name would be announced on the floor of the Senate during a plenary session and will be given the sum of N5,000,000 by the senate. In the end, Ogbonago received N11m as a reward for his integrity.

He was beyond shocked, as he never expected it. In an interview, he explained that he just wanted to help the customer find the money and never expected anything in return but got more than he imagined.

Ibrahim Ogbonago has gone ahead to further his career and even delve into politics, contesting for a seat in his state, Kogi.

The Reward Of Integrity: The Millionaire Security Guard (Opinion)

In a nutshell, the economy might be hard but your integrity should never be trampled upon. The fact that many feel it's okay to defraud people of their hard earned money doesn't make it right. Always show your integrity and the universe will reward you in due time.
