Is MURIC Right To Call For The Ban Of BBNaija? (Opinion)

The group, Muslim Rights Concern, has attacked the government, condemned and labelled the BBNaija show as immoral while asking for it to be banned.

Rejoice Obike

On June 30, 2019, the BBNaija season 4, themed “Pepper Dem Gang”, kicked off with 21 selected housemates. 11 days into the reality TV show, the Muslim Rights Concern called the government to shut it down.

For the Islamic group, BBNaija is not just a reality show. MURIC, in a statement by its Founder and Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Friday stated:

“We are being forcibly dragged to a world of nudity, shamelessness and open promiscuity. Inmates of BBNaija kiss, romance and engage in sex openly. BBNaija is Bohemian, anti-social, crude and immoral. It constitutes a potent danger to every home. BBNaija is Satanic. It is unacceptable. This reality show is dragging our children into a life of moral debauchery. It is robbing them of the last vestiges of honour. It is deleting the word ‘shame’ from their vocabulary. BBNaija has alienated our youth from the elders. A yawning lacuna now exists between the young and the old. Irreversible social crisis looms.”

On nudity:

Shows like these are usually about choice. You can choose to use your parental guidance or decide not to subscribe to the channel at all. However, the show is censored 18, and the airing of shower hours has been banned. The organisers have also announced an age restriction for every edition of BBNaija being aired as well as several ways to block the channel or keep under-aged people with contrary opinion from watching it.

Furthermore, he enlightened how the show has made the youths more materialistic. In his statement, President lshaq stated:

"Or do we not realise that for every single BBNaija inmate who wins a big amount of money and a car, more than 50 million young people are misled? Qur’an 30:41 says, ‘Evil has appeared on both land and sea as a result of the handiworks of men…”

On Materialism:

BBNaija has become a platform where the average Nigerian spurts from nothing to something. It is more empowering than all the efforts of the government to address unemployment and poverty. Not only do youths stay together in a house for months, they each get a chance to advertise their skills and draw in potential clients who want to leverage on them later on. Aside from the money, there is an opportunity to acquire fame and to advance your career in the creative industry. That is a plus in assisting to groom talents and give them a platform.

At some point in my life, I would have agreed that BBNaija was a time-wasting show whose aim was to distract everyone from what really mattered. But BBNaija or not, we have always remained a country with no real sense of purpose to actually solve global warming issues or world threats. Instead, we have been relegated to the background bothering our heads with irrelevant matters, while our counterparts face real problems and make new technological advancements. So, BBNaija is not the problem. If we want to fix ourselves, we would.
