Former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, is now a bona fide member of the ninth National Assembly.

He was, on Thursday, sworn in as senator by the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan.

Okorocha was not inaugurated on Tuesday as he was yet to be issued his certificate of return by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

With the latest development, this is a sigh of relief for Okorocha after several months of struggle to reclaim his mandate.

His problem had started after the February 23 election when the Returning Officer, Prof. Innocent Ibeabuchi, declared the election inconclusive, claiming he was forced to announce Okorocha as a winner under duress.

The INEC, thereafter, withheld his certificate of return to launch a proper investigation into the matter.

After so much litigation both in Abuja and Owerri, the Imo State capital, Justice Okon Abang of Federal High Court, Abuja, last week ordered INEC to issue Okorocha his certificate of return as a member of the National Assembly.

The Judge, in his ruling, described the commission’s action as lawless and arbitrary, and held that INEC no longer had any legal authority to withhold the certificate of return due to Okorocha, having been declared the winner of the election.
