Atiku Commends The US For New VISA Restrictions Given To Nigerians

Former Vice President of Nigeria and 2019 presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP], Atiku Abubakar, has lauded the US government for imposing certain restrictions on Nigerians who have been responsible for undermining Democracy in Nigeria.

The new visa restrictions have been lauded by many democratic leaders as well as political figures in the country, claiming that it ushers a new dawn for Democracy in Nigeria and the diaspora.

Atiku lost the presidential election in February 2019 to incumbent leader, Muhammadu Buhari, has issued a commendation statement through his media aide, Paul Ibe, He did this on Wednesday during a brief interview which held in Abuja. He encouraged Nigerians to remain steadfast, believing that the efforts of those who earnestly fought for 'true democracy' would not falter in vain.

The spokesperson for the US Department of State, Morgan Ortagus, on July 23, acknowledged Nigeria's 20th anniversary of her Democratic rule till date and reassured Nigerians of the commitment of the US to advancing Democracy in Nigeria.

His statement read:

"As Nigeria marks the twentieth anniversary of a return to democratic rule this year, we remain committed to working together to continue to advance democracy and respect for human rights and achieve greater peace and prosperity for both our nations.

“We condemn those whose acts of violence, intimidation, or corruption harmed Nigerians or undermined the democratic process.

“The US government said that we would consider consequences, including visa restrictions for individuals responsible for undermining the Nigerian democratic process or for organizing election-related violence.”
