Chief Justice Accuses Termites Of Eating School Certificate

Austin Papi

Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammed, the new Chief Justice of Nigeria, has suggested to the press and the senate that “vicious” termites ate his primary school certificate.

He claimed that the termites raided his home in Bauchi State and devoured all his personal documents in 1998. He further said that no portion of the primary school certificated could be restored.

On February 13, 2002, Mr Tanko who was then the Court of Appeal Judge in Jos swore an affidavit specifically for his primary school certificate. After the revelation of the affidavit by the senate to the public eye, the CJN came under scrutiny as to the authenticity of his story.

However, a parliamentary committee set up by the senate to authenticate the documents submitted by Mr Tanko has confirmed the authenticity of the affidavit after series of investigations.

The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, handpicked Tanko Muhammad as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria following his controversial impeachment of Walter Onnoghen earlier this year. Tanko then served as acting CJN during this period.

Justice Tanko Muhammad has been a subject of controversies for a while, as he was previously accused of falsifying his age at some point in his career. Reports suggest that he reduced his date of birth from 1950 to 1953, but a federal court ruled the case in his favour, pointing out that the accuser had no right whatsoever to file a lawsuit against Tanko.
