The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has ordered a swift manhunt for the killers of a Reverend Father, Paul Offu, who was reportedly shot dead by herdsmen.
The president made his intentions known on Saturday, in Abuja where he expressed great shock over the killing of the priest while also directing all law enforcement agencies to commence swift investigations and bring the culprits of the horrifying crime to justice.
The president's intentions were read out in a statement by the President's Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu.
"My sincerest condolences to the Catholic Church over the killing of Rev. Fr Paul Offu, Priest of St. James Greater Parish Catholic Church, Ugbawka, Enugu State,” he said in the statement.
The president also called on the people of Enugu State, the family of Offu, and members of the parish as well as all Christians to be strong, urging them that justice will soon be served to the perpetrators. In the statement, President Buhari also described the killing of the priest as “barbaric and unwarranted,” assuring the Catholic Church and all Nigerians that the security of lives and property will continue to top his priorities.
“The entire nation is shaken by the horrible assassination of this priest. The administration will continue to guarantee the freedom of religion and protect places of worship as well as the lives of citizens wherever they live,” he continued.
The president called on all religious leaders to pray for peace, healing and security of the country whilst also asking God to intercede in all the challenges facing our country, Nigeria.
