Election Tribunal: “I Will Appeal The Judgement,” Says Kalu

“I will appeal the judgement,” says Kalu.

Former Abia State Governor, Senator Orji Kalu, has said that he would not lose sleep over the tribunal’s verdict.

The tribunal sitting in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, on Monday, nullified his victory as senator representing Abia North Senatorial District.

The tribunal headed by Justice Cornelius Adebayo, after the nullification, ordered INEC to hold a rerun election in the area.

In his reaction, Orji Kalu who was Chief Whip of the Senate until the judgement, said with his popularity, he is confident of retaining his seat.

The former governor at the election scored 30,203 to defeat other candidates, including his closest rival, Chief Mao Ohaubunwa, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 20,801 votes in the February 23, 2019, general election.

While addressing his supporters, Kalu urged them to remain calm, strong and steadfast, adding that he would appeal the ruling.

“Following the decision of the National and State Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Umuahia, I will appeal the decision of the tribunal at the Court of Appeal.

“The PDP candidate, Ohaubunwa, is not popular among the people and as such, my victory in the national assembly poll as landslide.

“Any day, any time, the APC will defeat the PDP in Abia North Senatorial District. At the appropriate time, my mandate will be restored,” he said.
