Retirees Protest Eight Years Outstanding Pension Arrears in Bayelsa

Jayfred Ugo

Some retirees in Bayelsa State under the backing of Bayelsa State Pensioners Association (BPA) have appealed the state governor, Honourable Seriake Dickson, to pay their outstanding pension arrears of eight years.

The retirees, who were said to be about two hundred, have also called on the government to treat the matter as urgent, decrying the impoverished condition of the senior citizens of the state.

Governor Dickson has, however, been able to pay only N2.1bn out of N3.5bn, being part of the outstanding pension which was accumulated by his predecessor, Chief Timipre Sylva, before leaving office.

Alabo G. Bodi-Amaran, the president of the retirees association, who spoke at a press conference in Yenagoa, appealed to the state government to introduce a policy that includes non-profit funds from where the unpaid pensioners can receive money for the startup of small scale business. This, he maintained, would support those willing to start a business after retirement.

According to Bodi-Amaran, the retirees in the state have also decided to support any candidate who is willing and committed to paying their unpaid arrrears in the forthcoming November 16 governorship election .
