Serving senator and former governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun, has been accused of smuggling deadly arms and ammunition into the country.

According to reports, Amosun had earlier claimed that he had the approval of President Goodluck Jonathan for import waivers and end-user certificate from the Office of the National Security Adviser to bring the weapons into the country.

However, fresh reports suggest otherwise, revealing that he imported the weapons without permission from the presidency.

Recall that Amosun had admitted in June that he imported 1,000 AK-47 rifles, two million bullets, 13 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and other hardware for security efforts in his state in 2012.

The former governor had handed over the illegal arms to the police a day before his tenure expired on May 28, following accusations by the media.

After an extensive investigation into his claims, it has now been discovered that Amosun only had the approval of the government to import 13 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) to support the police in 2012 and there was no end-user certificate or import waiver issued to him to import 1,000 AK-47 rifles and two million bullets by the presidency.
