Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, who is known to be controversial, has opined that it is impossible to eradicate kidnapping due to the commercialization of the act.

Wike further explained that criminals have now turned kidnapping from a vice punishable by law to a business overlooked by politicians.

The Rivers State Governor made this remark during a courtesy visit by the Rotary International District 9141 on Monday at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

He, however, assured the people of Rivers State that his government would do its best to reduce kidnapping to its barest minimum.

"It is now impossible to stop kidnapping in Nigeria; it (kidnapping) is now a business. It has been commercialized.

"It is now a major business. Everyone must partner with the government to ensure that we reduce it to the barest minimum. But it cannot be totally eradicated," Wike said.

Governor Wike recently gave more ammunition and security gadgets to police operatives to help them combat crimes in the state, and to that effect, the Rivers State Police have apprehended one of their worst kidnap kingpins, Bobrisky. The governor has sworn to tackle crimes in the state.
