Kogi Election: Yahaya Bello Wins Okene Local Government

Austin Papi

The Kogi State Governor and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Yahaya Bello, has defeated his closest rivals, Musa Wada of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Natasha Akpoti of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), in the Okene Local Government Area (LGA) of Kogi central.

The incumbent governor polled a massive 112,764 votes to defeat Ms Akpoti and Mr Wada, who both had 50 and 139 votes respectively.

The result from the local government was announced by Mr Olanrewaju Samuel, an associate professor, who was also the collation officer for the local government.

The local government's result which was expected to be strongly contested became a walkover, as neither the PDP nor SDP could poll a total of 200 votes in all the polling units in the local government.

Okene Local Government is part of Kogi central senatorial district, and the SDP governorship candidate, Ms Akpoti, had criticised the conduct of the election in the senatorial district, saying no real election took place there.

Ms Akpoti further alleged that the incumbent governor was highly favoured in his local government.
