N7.2BN Fraud: Kalu To Appeal Ruling

The lawyers of the Chief Whip of the Senate, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, have perfected plans to file a stay of execution and bail pending appeal on behalf of the former governor of Abia State.

This is coming on the heels of yesterday’s conviction on the charges of the N7.2 billion fraud brought against him and two others by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Justice Muhammed Idris of the Federal High Court, on Thursday, sentenced Kalu and the Director of Finance during his tenure as the state governor, Ude Udeogo, to 12 years imprisonment. His company, Slok Nigeria Limited, was also convicted.

Reacting, one of Kalu’s lawyers, Chief Charles Ewelunta, said the legal team had obtained the Certified True Copy of the judgement and would file an appeal almost immediately.

Ewelunta noted that the team would file applications for a stay of execution and bail pending appeal, adding that both the stay of execution of the judgement and bail applications are permissible by law.
