ECOWAS: Buhari Hosts Heads Of State At The 56th Ordinary Session

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) held its 56th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of the Heads of State and Government at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who hosted the government leaders of the West African sub-region yesterday, urged them to adopt measures that would improve its economy and end insecurity.

Buhari said, “Let me restate Nigeria’s commitment to regional integration and stress the need to always channel our energies towards realising new strategies and initiatives, which will accelerate the attainment of our regional aspirations for sustainable peace, security, stability and inclusive economic growth.”

The leaders spoke about the increasing rate of terrorist attacks while the Nigerian president said a collaborative effort is required to tackle the menace.

“Attempts by terrorist groups remind the sub-region of the urgency to build an enduring security partnership to confront and defeat the evil of cross-border terrorism. It is always gratifying when our regional bloc comes together in the determination to advance our agenda for regional integration and promote the socio-economic development of our sub-region,” he said.

In his contribution, Issoufou Mahamadou, President of the Republic of Niger and Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, said it is imperative for the incumbent to respond to all attacks by terrorist with firmness and determination owing to the incessant attacks with has continued to test their commitment in the battle against the scourge.

Therefore, he urged for the leaders to create a common area of peace, security, and economic integration which according to him is the key to the region’s future.

The president of the ECOWAS Commission, Mr Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, also called for a resolute stand among the leader to collectively and effectively fight to eradicate the scourge.
