This Is The Time To Defend Obaseki - Shaibu

David Ugbabe

The Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has stated that the progress of the state must not be put in reverse.

He said this while alleging that there are plots by some persons to hamper the progress of the State.

The deputy governor made the statement on Wednesday while speaking with journalists in Benin City after he was decorated as the Midwest Tempo Magazine Man of the Year.

He awarded for his contributions to the growth of democracy in Nigeria and the development of the state.

He wondered why Oshiomhole wanted to stand against Obaseki’s second term bid, adding that the former governor once told him that he believed in second terms because the first terms are never enough for someone to make a difference.

He said, “I remember Oshiomhole told me he believes in second term, saying four years were not enough for someone to make a difference.”

Shaibu narrated the ordeal he went through alongside members of his family while he was trying to save the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, from being removed from office during his tenure as the state governor.

He said, “I was brutalised for Oshiomhole. I was prepared to lay down my life for him."

According to him, he threw his family members over the fence for safety when during an attacked meted against him for supporting Oshiomole, the then governor.

“My hands were stitched after I was attacked on the floor of the state House of Assembly, trying to save Adams Oshiomhole from being removed in his first and second terms in office," he added.

Shaibu stressed that, in the struggle for the second term, the “Edo people listened to him (Oshiomole) and the party gave him an overwhelming consensus, which made him emerge as the party’s candidate leading to his victory in the election.”

He urged that "It is now time for the people of Edo State to choose if we want progress."

He further added that “We are for good governance. We have a governor that has redefined good governance and he is doing all he promised the people during his campaign.”

Therefore, he charged the people of the state to support Governor Godwin Obaseki’s efforts aimed at redefining governance to improve the lives of residents.
