Pressure Mounts On Obasa To Step Down As Lagos Speaker

Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, is presently under intense pressure to step down since the removal of two principal officers, Hon. Rotimi Abiru and Mr Olumuyiwa Jimoh, as chief whip and deputy majority leader.

Since the two lawmakers were ousted, things have not been the same again, with many saying the suspension of the two lawmakers was a calculated plot against Senator Adebayo Oshinowo, better known as Pepperito.

The affected lawmakers were suspended over their gross misconduct, insubordination and actions capable of destabilising the house.

Oshinowo is a former member of the State Assembly and currently senator representing Lagos East at the National Assembly.

Further checks have confirmed that the top hierarchy of the Lagos chapter of the ruling party has swung into action to wrestle power from Obasa as a Lagos speaker with allegations of lack of transparency and high-handedness.

Recall, Obasa had earlier described the removal of two principal officers of the House and suspension of two other members as a measure to ensure that the legislature remains strengthened and its sanctity is maintained.

“The parliament is a heartbeat of every democratic system. Its sanctity, integrity and positive reputation should be guided and protected, hence discipline is a key and where it’s lacking, the hope of the people fizzles.

“Therefore, instilling discipline among members of the State House of Assembly does not equate with friction in any form between him and members of the party,” he said.

Obasa had, however, denied having any feud with Oshinowo.
