Oscar Pistorius…Journey to Prison!

Eight months after the ‘love day’ saga involving the killing of his girlfriend of three months, Reeva Steenkamp, at his home in Pretoria, Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius finally knows his fate- a five-year prison sentence.

Judge Thokozile, on Tuesday, October 21, handed down the maximum of five years sentence for culpable homicide that includes a concurrent three-year suspended prison sentence for separate reckless endangerment conviction, in a trial that commenced on March 3, 2014 in Pretoria.

While the SteenKamp family say they are satisfied with the sentence, though it clears Pistorius of murder, a barrage of uncomplimentary comments have greeted what many believe is a wispy sentence for a grave crime. But who can tell what a just sentence is but the Judge.

Pistorius who acknowledges that he shot Steenkamp, causing her death, had claimed that he mistook her for a possible intruder, and was made to undergo psychiatric evaluation to establish whether he was criminally responsible for shooting Steenkamp,

The request for the evaluation by the state prosecutor Gerrie Nel followed the testimony of forensic psychiatrist Merryll Vorster for the defence that Pistorius had been she had diagnosed with ‘generalised anxiety disorder’.

A capital NO was the answer. Meaning, the Paralympics champion and 400 metres Olympics gold medalist could be held criminally responsible.

“Mr Pistorius did not suffer from a mental illness or defect that would have rendered him criminally not responsible for the offence charged”, said state prosecutor, Nel.

It is not the first time Pistorius is made the principal focus in a court case but it was never for anything criminal.
