Akon gives back, Provides lights and jobs for young people

Ezinne Osuagwu

Akon Lighting Africa workers have been installing solar-powered street lights and residential systems. Hiring local young people and providing them with training, skills, and ultimately, steady jobs.

The initiative which is called ‘Akon Lighting Africa’ is geared towards assisting African countries to maximize the sun to provide electricity. A solar academy is also being launched in Bamako, Mali. and it aims to train Africans in ‘every aspect of installing and maintaining solar-powered electric systems and micro-grids’ given that the continent has 320 days of sunshine a year, particularly since 622 million Africans still do not have access to electricity.
