‘Teen Wolf’ Star Charlie Carver confirms gay status

Yvonne Williams

‘Teen Wolf’ star Charlie Carver came out as gay on Jan. 11. The  27 year old star star revealed he was inspired to finally come out by a quote he saw online. “Be who you needed when you were younger.”

His post:
“Be who you needed when you were younger,” read the message that Charlie saw that inspired him to come out to the world. “I’m not one for inspirational quotes. It struck me for some reason.” Charlie took to Instagram to explain why he decided to finally come clean. “As a young boy, I knew I wanted to be an actor. It was around that age that I also knew, however abstractly, that I was different from some of the other boys in my grade.”

Charlie had this realization when he was twelve and finally was ready to tell himself, and his family, the truth. “Over time, this abstract “knowing” grew and articulated itself through a painful gestation marked by feelings of despair and alienation, ending in a climax of saying three words out loud: ‘I am gay’.” However, something got in the way of being who he was in public. He did become an actor, and he didn’t want to put that in jeopardy. “If I came out, I feared I would be limiting myself to a type, to a perception with limits that I was not professionally comfortable with.”

“But then I saw that little photo on Instagram. Well, in truth, it had found me long after I’d made up my mind to write something like this,” explained the Teen Wolf star. He says that young people are trying to make life easier for each other, and he wanted to be a part of it. “We’re learning new vocabularies to help others feel heard when they try and articulate their perceived ‘otherness’- words like cis- and trans-, non-binary, fluid.”

“I now believe that by omitting this part of myself from the record, I am complicit in perpetuating the suffering, fear, and shame cast upon so many in the world.” So, Charlie did something so brave and noble by telling the truth about himself. “So now, let the record show this- I self-identify as gay. And does that really matter anymore? As a young man, I needed a young man in Hollywood to say that- and without being a dick about it, I owe it to myself, more than anything, to be who I needed when I was younger.

He wrote in a lengthy Instagram post.
