Silva shines as Manchester City grind out win over Leicester City

Manchester City were pushed all the way by bottom-of-the-table Leicester City before sealing a 2-0 win which keeps the gap behind league-leaders Chelsea down to five points.

It was not until the 34th minute that the home side tested Leicester goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, as Wilfried Bony knocked Jesus Navas’ whipped cross towards goal forcing the veteran Australian into a good reaction stop.

Leicester kept 10 men behind the ball for long periods of the first-half and Manuel Pellegrini’s side were only able to break through when David Silva tapped in from three yards out after Robert Huth and Wes Morgan had blocked shots in the build-up.

Leicester reacted well after half-time and should have had a penalty five minutes after the interval when Fernando tripped Andrej Kramaric just inside the area but referee Kevin Friend only gave a freekick. The Foxes came even closer to an equaliser with 15 minutes to play when Riyad Mahrez hit the post with a deflected half-volley, but the home side made them pay for that profligacy when James Milner emphatically side-footed another Jesus Navas cross into the net two minutes from time.
