Liverpool have joined the race to sign Barcelona defender Dani Alves and are ‘hopeful’ of securing the Brazilian’s signature, according to the latest gossip. Liverpool hopeful of signing Alves: Liverpool remain hopeful of signing 31-year-old Manchester United and Arsenal target Dani Alves, who will be free to leave Barcelona in the summer, according to a report in the Daily Star.

The Reds’ current right-back, Glen Johnson, looks increasingly likely to depart Anfield in the summer as his representatives and the club continue to struggle to agree on terms of a new deal, leading to Liverpool looking for alternatives. The Star claim that Liverpool have targeted Alves as Johnson’s replacement and will look to sign the Brazilian from under the nose of both Arsenal and Manchester United, who have also been linked with the current Barca full-back.

Paper round’s view: Reports suggest that Glen Johnson’s wage demands are a huge stumbling block in any contract negotiations between the England defender’s representatives and Liverpool. Johnson recently revealed that no talks had taken place in recent months, leaving him with no idea where he will be playing his football next season. And with it becoming clear that Alves will almost certainly leave the Nou Camp it comes as no surprise to see Brendan Rodgers’ side linked with the defender. However, Man United have apparently been the favourites to sign Alves for a while now, and with his agent claiming that a deal may be just around the corner, Liverpool will have to move quickly, and stump up a lot of cash if they are to beat United to his signature.
