Enyeama pulls out of Tanzania clash

Fola Akintomide

Super Eagles captain Vincent Enyeama has withdrawn from Nigeria’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania on Saturday, Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh said.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Oliseh revealed that Enyeama has chosen not to be part of the Nigerian team to Dar-es-Salaam.

“Vincent (Enyeama) is not going to be a part of it (the game against Tanzania), I can confirm that to you, he won’t be a part of it,” Oliseh said.

Speaking further, Oliseh extolled Enyeama’s qualities but admitted that his late withdrawal from the squad has put them in a ‘complicated position’.

“With all due respect, Vincent Enyeama is a very good goalkeeper, a classy goalkeeper. But his late withdrawal has put us in a very complicated situation.

“But what happens should our best player fall sick before a match? Should Nigeria withdraw from the match? It is a sign of disrespect to say if one player is not there they will crumble.

“So we have to move on. He withdrew himself, not us, so we have to move on and cope with it,” Oliseh added.

Following Enyeama’s withdrawal from the squad, Wolverhampton Wanderers of England goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme is expected to be in goal and make his international debut.
