Arsenal shocked both fans and pundits when they broke the bank in 2013 to execute what can be termed “Transferdecoup” to land German midfielder, Mesuit Ozil from Real Madrid. His style and ability for providing assists for his team-mates has been compared by former manager, José Mourinho to that of Real Madrid’s legend, Zinedine Zidane. He clocks 27 today and we celebrate with him by identifying 10 must-know-things about the Arsenal star.

Humble beginning
Ozil made his first professional start with Schalke in 2006 He moved to Werder Bremen in 2008 and then joined Real Madrid in 2010 before switching to Arsenal in 2013.

His nickname
Ozil has been called many things but one interesting nickname is -The Raven – due to his smart and opportunistic style of play.

He loves to pray

He spent his bonus for winning the 2014 World Cup on operations for 23 Brazilian children.

Ozil ranks as the 7th most popular sportsman on social media and Jose Mourinho is a big fan too. The Chelsea tactician once said, “Ozil is unique, there is no copy of him, not even a bad copy”

He is Arsenal’s top man
He arrived from Real Madrid for £42.4m in 2013 and is the highest paid at the moment with £140,000-a-week.

Interesting tatoos
Ozil has a huge roaring lion on his upper left arm and another tattoo that says “Only God Can Judge Me” the name of a Tupac song.

He is a German Legend
The World Cup has been named Germany player of the year three times, in 2011, 2012 and 2013

Future Ambition
Ozil is surely ambitious as he says, “If I continue to develop well and stay healthy, I would like, in the next few years, to hold the Ballon d’Or in my hands. I am convinced that it can happen”
