Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been named as the highest paid sportsperson according to Forbes’ annual list of the world’s wealthiest athletes.
The list which had been always been topped by professional boxer, Floyd Mayweather Jr. or legendary golfer, Tiger Woods for more than a decade, now has the Portuguese striker retaining the position for the
second straight year.

But with Mayweather retiring and Woods not playing because of injury, the Portuguese captain has risen to the top. He earned $88m (£60.6m) from salary, bonuses and endorsements last year. Ronaldo, 31, is only
the second team sport athlete, after basketball superstar Michael Jordan, to have topped the list since Forbes began tracking earnings in 1990.
His off-pitch earnings of $32m (£22m) include a $13m-a-year deal (£8.96m) with sportswear company, Nike – which has partnerships with half the top 100 stars.
There is no stopping Ronaldo as he scored his 600th career goal  and secured a contract extension with Real Madrid that will pay more than $50 million annually for the next four years. On Sunday, he led his team to a second straight Champions League title against Italian side, Juventus, making Real Madrid is the first team to win back-to-back
Champions League titles since the tournament’s revamp in 1998.
