Former Arsenal midfielder,Petit believes Arsenal’s defense could cost them a place in the top four of the Premier League.
Arsenal have won their last two games in the league against West Ham and Cardiff city after losing their first two, conceding eight goals in the process. And the former Gunner who enjoyed a title winning campaign with Arsenal believes it is one problem yet to be addressedfrom the Wenger era.
“Arsenal’s defence is still a long way from the level needed to compete with the top four teams in the Premier League. Petit said while speaking to RMC sports
“We saw it again against Cardiff. It is a recurring problem, that dates back years with Arsenal.
“It has never been fixed, neither by Unai Emery, nor Arsene Wenger, nor the players out on the pitch.
“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette can score 40 to 50 Premier League goals a season between them if they are picked to start matches.
“But even with these two, Arsenal won’t be able to finish in the top three if they don’t sort out their defensive problems.
It is a problem even those inside Arsenal are aware. Even Lacazette admitting to it after scoring the winner against Cardiff.
He said: “We are learning a lot but the manager says we will concede goals.
“We just make mistakes because we are learning like children. So it is okay it is good. We will be better week after week.”
Stephan Lichtsteiner, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Bernd Leno drafted joined the Gunners during the last transfer window. But there is still no sign of progress being made in that part of the pitch. With Petr Cech also struggling with the system that requires him to play out from the back .
