Jan Oblak was omitted from the FIFPro nominees this Monday, a decision that has not gone down well with those at Atletico Madrid.
De Gea, Stegen, Buffon, Courtois and Navas are the top five goalkeepers nominated for the award this year.
But Rojiblancos manager Diego Simeone thinks the award has very little credibility. Speaking to Cadena Cope’s El Partidazo programme the Argentine said :
“[Thibaut] Courtois wouldn’t start for Atletico. Oblak is better,” he said, when comparing the Belgian and Slovenian ‘keepers.
“Oblak is one of the top three goalkeepers in the world.
“The fact that he’s not in this group gives it [the award] little credibility. The world is speaking about Oblak as the best ‘keeper. It’s surprising”, he finished.
Atletico Madrid star Griezmann who was also left out of the FIFA The Best Award also expressed his shock at Oblak’s absence.
“For me he is the best goalkeeper in the world… and not just because he’s in my team. We can’t do anything more. He is a top player”, the Frenchman said during the presentation of a new Movistar programme.
