Wreckage from the plane carrying Cardiff City's record signee, Emiliano Sala, has been found in the English channel, search director David Mearns has revealed.

A search boat located the wreckage of Piper Malibu N264DB, which was piloted by David Ibbotson and was transporting the footballer from Nantes, France, to Cardiff before disappearing from radar near the Casquets lighthouse at about 8:30pm on Monday, 21 January, 2019.

Search for the missing plane commenced earnestly as authorities tried to rescue the player and pilot but the search was eventually halted after over 80 hours with Harbour Master Captain David Barker saying they had 'exhausted their options'.

But following donations by over 4,500 people to a GoFundMe page set up to raise €300,000 a private search re-commenced early on Sunday with the wreckage found off Guensey.

And in compliance to agreement reached with the AAIB, The Air Accident Investigation Branch, the position has been communicated and their vessel, the GO Ocean 3, have moved in to conduct ROV (remotely operated vehicle) investigations.

Sala was signed by Cardiff for a club-record fee from French side Nantes on January 19, 2019 before travelling back to France to bid his former team goodbye and pick the rest of his things.

He was expected back in Wales but never arrived.

Tributes have been pouring in for the player at both clubs with Cardiff City players wearing a shirt with the picture of the player during warm up.

Flowers, scarves, shirts and other messages have also been laid outside the stadium.
