Di Maria Says He Only Had Issues With Van Gaal After Hostile Old Trafford Reception

Angel Di Maria has reiterated that he only had problems with van Gaal and not Manchester United fans while he was with the club after he was booed on his return to his former stomping ground.

PSG defeated United 2-0 at Old Trafford in their Champions League first-leg clash on Tuesday with the Argentine assist both goals for Kipembe and Mbappe.

The English side faces sanctions from UEFA after fans threw beer bottles at the winger who handled the situation cheekily.

But following the match, Di Maria has said that even though he had no qualms with United, he expected the hostile treatment after ditching the club for the French champions in a £44 million ($56m) in 2015.

He told Cadena Cope radio: "[The reception] was difficult from the opening minute but I knew this was going to happen.

"But I've said it in the past and I reiterate it, I never spoke badly of the people here and of this club.

"These are things that happen and people took it badly. I only had problems with the coach here."

Di Maria's coach, Thomas Tuchel singled out the 31-year-old for praise for his performance and handling of the situation.

"I thought he had a good relationship with the fans. He was a bit nervous and needed to be calmer in the first-half. In the end, he did well," he said.

"I'm happy that he stayed confident. I'm happy that he stayed always like this, super-reliable because he's always working hard."

Di Maria played just 27 games for United in an ill-fated season after joining from Real Madrid.
