For the second time in less than a month, a Nigerian fighter is the center of attraction in professional fighting creating yet another amazing record to become the World champion.

Kamaru Usman is the new UFC Welterweight Champion after defeating the legendary Tyron Woodley via a unanimous decision of 50-44, 50-44, and 50-45 on the judges’ scorecard.

Woodley had been champion since 2016 and defended his title four times before losing against the Nigerian in Las Vagas.

The win made the Nigerian-American mixed martial artist the first African champion in the Ultimate Fighting Championship history.

Recall that just over three weeks ago, another Nigerian in the diaspora, Abraham Adesanya who is based in New Zealand was in the public eye following his win against MMA's legend Anderson Silva in the middleweight category

Speaking to a cheering crowd after the historic victory, Kamaru who celebrated in the cage with his daughter said: “Can’t nobody handle me?.

“I’ve been wanting this fight, and I’ll be honest, I might not be the best striker in the world. I might not be the best wrestler in the world, but when it comes to mixing this stuff up, I’m the best in the world right now."

The 32-year-old who was a former NCAA Division II wrestler broke into the UFC in February 2015 and has since been climbing up the ladder.

As a professional MMA fighter, the 'Nigerian nightmare' has been involved in 16 fights, losing just once to Jose Caceres in his early days as a pro in May 2013.

In February 2015, Kamaru was named as one of the fighters selected to be on The Ultimate Fighter: American Top Team vs. Blackzilians. A bout which he won the finals against Hayder Hassan on July 12, 2015, at The Ultimate Fighter 21 Finale and was rewarded with a UFC contract.

The Benin City-born son of a former Nigerian soldier who migrated to the US with his family when he was 8, went on to win 8 other fights on his way to being the top challenger for Woodley's belt.

Usman is 6 ft 0 in (1.83 m) tall and Weighs 170 lb (77 kg; 12 st). He has a reach 76in (193 cm) and 51℅ striking accuracy.
