In what has been heralded as one of the nicest gestures by a sports person this year, Mesut Ozil (30), is being hailed by many for putting smiles on the faces of a young Kenyan 'herdsboy' and his brothers.

Early December last year, a photo of a young Ozil fan who had painted the player's name with a marker on his Arsenal jersey went viral after a Kenyan journalist shared it on Twitter.

Erik Njiru, a Kenyan Rugby expert and Liverpool fan, had met Lawrence (9) walking the streets of Nairobi as he sought for grass for some cows to graze on.

Surprised by the young boy's creativity, he took a shot of him and shared it on his timeline.

The picture gained a lot of likes and retweets and eventually got to the German star, who has now sent souvenirs, which include authentic Arsenal jerseys, caps, and boots.

Sharing his delight at being able to make a distant fan happy, Ozil wrote: "The picture of a Kenyan boy with a self-made shirt on Twitter touched me so much. 🇰🇪❤ And look at Lawrence now – it's so heartwarming to see him and his brothers happy."

The World Cup winner, who quit international football last year following strong criticism in his country over his performances with the national team, has struggled to make the Arsenal squad on a regular since the appointment of Unai Emery.
