Mutiu Adepoju Urges Super Eagles To Take Seychelles Game Serious

Former Nigeria international, Mutiu Adepoju, has admonished the Super Eagles to play their game against Seychelles like they have not qualified.

Nigeria has qualified for this year’s continental tournament in Egypt, having amassed 10 points from their first five games and they defeated the Pirates in their final qualifying match on Friday.

But their top spot could be relinquished if they fail to get a win and South Africa with just one point behind goes on to beat Libya.

This is the reason Mutiu Adepoju urged Gernot Rohr's men to take the game as another preparation for the tournament that holds later this year.

"It is a dead rubber encounter and we have qualified already but that does not mean we should forget the importance of the game because it is a qualifier which we have to play as if we have not qualified,” Mutiu, who played 42 times for the Super Eagles, told Goal.

“We have to take it seriously because if we have qualified and we're looking forward to going to the tournament which is the Africa Cup of Nations, we have to play with all seriousness and field the available key players.”

While many called for Gernot Rohr to experiment with the team by inviting some fresh legs, Adepoju acknowledged that there isn't much time for trials.

“The Afcon is barely in three months and there's not enough time to prepare so most of the players that are going to go should be among the players to play against Seychelles.

“Leaving all those [regular] players could amount to waste of time. All the matches from now on should be in preparation for the tournament we have ahead.”

The former Real Madrid player expects the team to come up with a good game plan, having endured a six-year absence from the tournament.

“I expect a very serious game and playing the game as if we have not qualified and I expect to see how the players can play together.

“Definitely, expecting a win because no game is small and you have to play every game to win.”
