The Nigeria Football Federation has moved to support former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu, with his medical bills following directives by the body's president, Amaju Pinnick.

The ex-international’s health is reportedly in a critical state, with several pictures of him unable to walk without assistance appearing on the Internet.

A Gofundme account has been created for public donations by the Grand Patron of Ex-Enugu Rangers Players Association, Benson Ejindu, with just over $3000 dollars from the $50,000 target realized so far.

Ejindu wrote on the GoFundMe page: "For all the lovers of football (soccer), especially those who love African football, one of the legends of that sport is in dire need of medical attention.

"Christian "Chairman" Chukwu, who captained the famous Enugu Rangers International FC and the Nigeria national team in the 1970s and early 1980s, needs a different type of support - your financial support. Your support, no matter how small, will offset the cost of surgeries and treatments to restore his debilitating health.

"When I received the attached video, I thought it was an April Fool's joke.

"We are hoping to raise about $50,000 to cover Christian Chukwu's round trip flight from Nigeria and all the medical expenses. Leftover funds will help set up a health and welfare account for all Ex-Rangers Players."

Following this move by the Ex-Rangers players association, the Nigeria Football Federation has, through its president, confirmed they would be supporting the 1980 Nations Cup-winning captain in offsetting his bills.

“I am not in Nigeria presently but I have asked the NFF Acting President, Barr. Seyi Akinwunmi, to take full charge and ensure that this matter is treated promptly.

"It was for this kind of development that I spoke about the welfare foundation for our legends at the 2nd AITEO-NFF Awards in Lagos on 1st April 2019.

"The NFF would always be there to lend support to our legends in their hour of need,” Pinnick told the NFF official website.

The President, who is on continental duty in his position as 1st Vice-President of CAF and President of AFCON, mandated the Chairman of Enugu State Football Association and member of the NFF Executive Committee, Hon. Chidi Ofo Okenwa, to pay a visit and get the details of his challenges and what needs to be done to return him to good health.

Christian Chukwu coached Nigeria's national football team between 2002 and 2005, leading the team to finish third at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
