The Flying Eagles began their FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign in Poland with a convincing 4-0 win against Qatar to get to the top of Group D.

Goals by Maxwell Effiom and Henry Offia gave the West Africans a 2-0 half time lead before Tom Dele-Bashiru and Olasunkanmi Aliyu wrapped up the win in the second half.

The Nigerian team started brightly and got a reward for their efforts just twelve minutes after the blast of the first whistle.

Maxwell Effiom converted with a volley after Qatar goalkeeper, Shebab Mamdouh, parried Ikouwem Utin's shot into his path.

The lead was doubled twelve minutes later when captain Effiom Utin provided the assist for Offia to score.

Manchester City's Dele-Bashiru and Olasunkanmi Aliyu completed the rout for the Nigerians in the second half as they moved to the summit of their group before the game between Ukraine and the USA.

The next game is against the Americans on Monday in Tychy. A win would see the Flying Eagles progress to the knockout stages of the competition.
