Neymar starred in a 2-0 friendly win over Qatar but his role ended in the 19th minute when he was carried off the pitch by the medics after a bad tackle to his lower right leg.

The medics confirmed the injury to be a tear in the right ankle ligament.

The fans at the Brasilia's mane Garrincha Stadium had their hands in their mouth as they watched their golden boy in tears while he sat out the remainder of the match with a huge ice pack strapped to his lower right leg.

The injury came shortly after Richarlison had scored the opener in the 17th minute.

With the Copa America just nine days away, the host nation faces an uphill task of winning South America's continental championship for the first time since 2007.

The embattled PSG and Brazil striker has had a torrid season, on and off the field. He was out for over two months during the just concluded season, as he suffered from a recurring injury.

Neymar has received two separate suspensions for insulting a referee and hitting a fan. He also lost the captaincy of the Brazilian national team.

In between all these was the rape allegation, though fresh reports suggest that the allegation has been dropped after a furious Neymar publicly disclosed his WhatsApp chat with the accuser in an Instagram video.
