Nigeria's Super Falcons were defeated 3-0 by Norway in their opening game at the FIFA Women's World Cup in France.

Although the Nigerians started the game brightly and made the Norwegians uncomfortable, they were soon humbled by their opponents who scored three times in the first half to seal the victory.

A deflected strike by Guro Reiten on 17 minutes and two quick-fire strikes from Lisa-Marie Utland (34) and an Osinachi Ohale own goal 3 minutes later took the wind out of the Nigerian ladies.

The African Champions had a few chances at the other end, too, but were not clinical enough to convert them into goals.

"When it comes to sport, never ever give up. We have to fight for 180 minutes more, plus added time. A game can change in the last minute so we will work very hard for it and I can promise that we'll never give up," Thomas Dennerby said in a post-match interview as he tried to encourage his team.

The Swedish gaffer and his team would have to shake off the shackles of the defeat areas of their second group game against South Korea on Wednesday.

Norway will square up against hosts, France, who defeated South Korea 4-0 in the opening game of the tournament.
