CAF Champions League: Esperance Insistent On Keeping Trophy And Medals

Jayfred Ugo

Esperance Sportive De Tunis have refused to replay the CAF Champions League Final.

Esperance were in the lead, 1-0, when Walid El Karti scored what should have been the equalizer for Wyad Casablanca of Morocco on the 58th minute but the referee and Gambian man, Bakari Gassama, ruled it out as offside.

When the Wyad players appealed to the referee to review the goal he ruled out with Video Assistant Referee [VAR], he refused and that made the Wyad players walk off the pitch.

CAF has alleged that the VAR was faulty, hence a rematch should be in the cards. But Esperance have failed to return the medals and trophies awarded to them after the match was declared a "walk over."

According to their Spokesperson:

"We don't want to play. We won the trophy, we took the medals, we were given a go ahead by the officials and we are champions. For the fact that the VAR wasn't there is not our fault.

“It's CAF's duty to make sure that everything is perfect. They found out that the VAR wasn't available before the match started but nothing was said. We are not going to play another Final.

"If CAF or FIFA has a problem with our final decision, let them play their own Final with the referees and VAR.”
