Fernando Torres Retires After 18 Years Of Football

Jayfred Ugo

The end of an Era beckons, as the likes of David Beckham, Pirlo, Gerrard and even Frank Lampard have drawn the curtains on their illustrious careers.

It seems as though Fernando Torres has joined that bandwagon. The Spanish striker took to his official Twitter handle to announce his retirement from football at just the age of 35!

This announcement will come as a shock to the Asian club, Sagan Tosu, who secured the services of Fernando from Atleti last year. Torres is set to hold a press conference in Japan later today.

The Spanish superstar, Torres, broke through the youth ranks of his hometown club, Atletico Madrid, before joining Liverpool in 2007, where he went on to score 81 goals in the four seasons he spent there, winning the UEFA champions league and scoring 24 goals in his first season.

Fernando also won the Europa league and FA cup but this time with the blue side of London, Chelsea. His national team career is also filled with exclusive glory, as he won the 2008 and 2012 Euros championship with Spain. Then in "South Africa 2010" , he lifted the most coveted football trophy, the world cup with Spain.

He had moved from Chelsea to Italy on loan in 2015, to join Ac Milan however, his stay in Milan was short-termed as he eventually joined boyhood club Atletico Madrid in 2016, where he was welcomed and treated like a prodigal son.

The end of an Era indeed
