Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, could not conceal his excitement as Nigeria became the first team to advance to the Round of 16, following a slim 1-0 victory over Guinea in their second group stage fixture.

Kenneth Omeruo's second half header made the difference, as Nigeria consolidated their top spot in Group B with six maximum points in two games. The Chelsea defender, Omeruo, who spent 2018/2019 season on loan at the Spanish club, Leganes, was a stalwart in defense. He played a key role in stopping Guinea's attack. In the second half, he turned goalscorer when the match seemed like it would end goalless at the Alexandria Stadium, Egypt.

Gernot Rohr has expressed great delight with the players for their display on the pitch. He had this to say:

"It was a good performance from the team today, we played really well though it was a tough game from Guinea," Rohr said after the game.

“I am happy we could deal with the danger they posed and being the first into the round of 16 is a joy for us.

“Now we have to ensure we finish off well against Madagascar in our last game to top the pool.”

The Super Eagles will have an inconsequential final group game against Madagascar on June 30, though the coach has hinted that they will not take the game lightly even after qualification.
