Spanish number one goalie, David de Gea, has set his sights on the leadership role in Manchester United squad, stating that he would be "really happy" if named the Manchester United captain.

The Spain international is currently finalizing talks over a new contract at Old Trafford, as he is set to commit his future to the Premier League outfit. He will be earning a mouthwatering £375,000 a week, making him the highest paid goalkeeper in the world.

With great wages come great responsibilities and it seems DDG is willing to fill the shoes of Manchester United’s legendary goalkeepers that have gone on to wear the captain band. A big example is the Dutch veteran, Van Der Sa.

Antonio Valencia has departed the club, leaving Manchester United coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in search of a new permanent captain and De Gea wants to be considered.

Speaking at an event for supporters in Singapore on Sunday night, the 28-year-old said:

“I’ve been captain for some games. Of course it is amazing to be captain of a club like Manchester United and defend this badge.

“It’s amazing, so of course I’ll be really, really happy to captain.

“It’s my ninth season, I feel like one of the most experienced players.

“I need to show that on the pitch and try to help the young guys know what Manchester United means and that’s important.”
