Super Eagles Midfielder, Etebo, Launches Football Camp In Lagos

Austin Papi

Super Eagles and Stoke City Midfielder, Oghenekaro Etebo, launched a summer football camp on July 22, 2019.

The camp is a 5-day program that will start on July 22 and end on July 26. The camp commenced on Monday, July 22, at the legacy pitch, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos State.

The Delta State born midfielder is currently in partnership with a local based grassroots club, called Springsoca Academy, owned by Mr Emmanuel Dipo Olawale. The 24-year-old footballer, Etebo, was an integral part of the Super Eagles squad that claimed the bronze medal in the Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] 2019, hosted in Egypt. He is reportedly in Nigeria but won't be present at the camp until Thursday, July 25.

The camp, which commenced on Monday, saw dignitaries and NPFL coaches in attendance. Oghenekaro's wife, Mrs Bethel Etebo, was present in her husband's stead, and along with her was Wealth Etebo, Etebo's son. The Media Officer of Springsoca Academy, Moses Ikenye, spoke exclusively to Happenings Media correspondent:

Q

What’s the camp all about?

The camp is an initiative from Etebo in conjunction with Springsoca Academy to groom young talents, male and female from the ages of 5 to19. Etebo hopes to give young talents a platform he wasn’t given growing up in the slumps of Warri, Delta.

Q

What is the schedule of the camp like?

The program starts on July 22 and is scheduled to continue for five days. Camp closes by 26th of July.

Q

So far what has been the outcome? Are you having entrants already?

Yes, fantastic turnout. I must commend Nigerians who have shared Etebo’s dream. We’ve had 50 entrants already, surprisingly most of them are female.

Q

Is the camp still open? What is the registration process?

Yes, the camp is still accepting entrants. We have two categories of entrants, the residential package, where we provide accommodation and transportation for the entrants all through the camping process, the fee is N25,000, and we also have the non-residential package. The entrants will have to come from home and report to camp every day.

Q

Etebo is not here today, when will he grace the camp?

As you know, he just arrived Nigeria from Egypt where he had featured for the Super Eagles at the AFCON 2019. He will not be coming alone, too. He promises to bring some Super Eagles players like Daniel Akpeyi, John Ogu, and many more.

Oghenekaro Etebo started his football career in Warri Wolves, a delta based club, which recently gained promotion back to the NPFL. He went on to establish himself in Europe, his first European club being Portuguese top flight club, Feirense, before joining Las Palmas on loan in Spain during the 2017-2018 season.

English championship team, Stoke City, acquired his signature on a permanent basis in June 2018, a deal estimated to be around £6.5M.
