Argentine Captain and Barcelona forward, Lionel Messi, is expected to be out for sometime after suffering a minor calf injury during Barcelona’s first training.

The 32-year-old forward sustained a grade one strain to the calf muscles on his right leg in his first training session with La Liga's champions, Barcelona.

"I was looking forward to starting and unfortunately I had an accident in the first training session that will leave me out for a little while," he wrote on Instagram.

"I'm grateful for all your messages and displays of affection, I wanted to be with the team and with the people who follow us in the USA.

"It wasn't to be this time, but we'll see each other again soon. A hug to everyone," Lionel Messi said in an interview.

Due to his extended holiday, the five-time Balon d'Or winner will miss Barca's pre-season games in the United States while he recovers from the injury and might also miss the first week of action in the resumption of the La Liga 2019/2020 season. There is no exact time frame, however, on his recovery, but Messi does not seem to think the injury will keep him sidelined for long.

Messi had a disappointing 2019 Copa America outing with Argentina, where he saw a red card in the third place match against Chile where his country eventually came out victorious. He scored only one goal all through the competition and was fined for his derogatory comments at the competition's organizers.
