Arsenal Captain, Laurent Koscielny, Joins Bordeaux

Austin Papi

Football star, Laurent Koscielny, has switched from England to France, where he will be playing for Ligue 1 side, Bordeaux, in a deal reported to be in the range of £4-5million.

Koscielny was said to be in talks with Arsenal for a new contract extension but it is understood that the defender was keen to return to France. He, therefore, refused to go on Arsenal's preseason tour to the United States of America (USA) and put in a request to have his contract terminated to force a move out of the club which was initially rejected by the Emirate side. Fresh reports, however, suggest Arsenal accepted a bid from Bordeaux.

The 33-year-old, who turns 34 on September 10, joined Arsenal in 2010 from French club, Lorient, and went on to make 353 appearances. He was finally awarded the captain armband in the 2016-17 season.

The move to Bordeaux by the former Arsenal defender and captain was announced in a statement on the club’s official website.

“Laurent Koscielny has officially signed for the Girondins de Bordeaux. The club is thrilled to welcome the France international, who joins us from Arsenal,” the statement said.

“The club is absolutely delighted to welcome a player with such a wealth of top-level international experience. And now we can’t wait to see him in action with the boys in blue! Bienvenue Laurent!”
