Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, secured the gold medal at the just concluded African Games in Morocco.

The Nigerian women defeated their West African counterparts, Cameroon, in a thrilling encounter. The match was decided on penalties, in which the Falconets came out with a 3-2 win and were awarded the football gold.

This is the third time that Nigeria will be winning the football gold in the women’s category after just five editions of the tournament.

Nigeria and Cameroon were in the same group during the group stage and both sides settled for a 1-1 when they played earlier. However, the final encounter on Thursday proved to be another feisty tie as the two teams battled each other for 120 minutes because there was no goal to separate both sides.

Chiamaka Nnadozie, after her heroics at the World Cup with the Super Falcons in France, proved yet again to be a hero in Morocco as she saved three successive penalty kicks to help Nigeria to win the gold medal. While it is the third gold medal for Nigeria, it came after a 12-year wait.
