European football teams, Arsenal, Everton, Bayer Leverkusen and AS Roma, have congratulated Nigeria as the country celebrates 59 years of independence today.

The West African country celebrates 59 years since they gained independence from their colonial masters, Britain.

In a show of good faith and joining the rest of the world to celebrate that feat, the European sides put out congratulatory messages on their social media pages.

The first to send out their best wishes was AS Roma. The Italian side wrote: "Happy Independence Day to all Naija pikin. Una be di best! Continue to dey shine to di rest of di world."

Barely three minutes after AS Roma's congratulatory post went up, Everton who had in the past been the home of ex-Super Eagles stars, Daniel Amokachi, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Joseph Yobo, and Victor Anichebe, shared theirs.

"Happy Independence Day, Nigeria!" the club, which pays winger Alex Iwobi's weekly wage, wrote.

Hours later, North London side, Arsenal, tweeted. The Gunners shared a photo of their former star, Kanu Nwankwo, in action for the Super Eagles along with a pidgin caption that read:

"Chei! Abeg comot for road! Today, Nigeria celebrates independence! Best wishes to you, Naija Gooners."
