Leganes Seek Replay After VAR Failure

Austin Papi

La Liga side Leganes, the club of Nigeria's International defender, Kenneth Omeruo, recently appealed to the Spanish Football Federation, seeking a replay of their match against Levante.

This is following claims from the referee that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system had failed after developing a temporary malfunction.

Leganes Seek Replay After VAR Failure

Leganes announced in their statement released to a sports media house that VAR wrongfully awarded their opponent, Levante, a first-half penalty for a foul by Dimitris Siovas on Roger Marti which reportedly occurred outside the area.

The centre referee, Munuera Montero, explained that his communication equipment appeared to have failed. He was communicating with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) officials through a phone instruction passed down to the fourth official, so the referee allegedly heard the VAR decision via phone.

Levante went on to defeat Leganes 2-1. The club president of Leganes, Victoria Pavon, said her club, currently sitting at the bottom of La Liga, requested for the match to be replayed from the 44th minute, when the incident took place, as the club will not fall victim to the technological disorder of the VAR system.
