Andy Murray Fumes At Fognini Over ‘Noise-Making’

Bernard Femi

Former world number one, Andy Murray, got into an argument with the 12th ranked Fabio Fognini at their Shanghai Masters on Tuesday.

Murray, who accused Fognini of shouting when a match was about to commence, claimed it was a distraction which was not allowed in the rules of lawn tennis.

Fognini and Murray played against each other and their match lasted three hours. It was not a favourable one for the former world number one. Fognini is expected to play American, Taylor Fritz, or Russian, Seed Karen Khachanov, in the last 16 after a successful 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 7-6 (7/2) victory.

Murray explained that when he was about to hit the ball, he heard a noise and he was trying to figure out where the noise was coming from when he made eye contact with Fognini. According to him, Fognini asked why he was looking at him.

“The sound came from him, which you’re not allowed to do. It’s against the rules, it’s hindrance, you shouldn’t do it," Murray explained.

The tree-time grand slammer failed to win. He claimed that it was rare of him to serve for a match twice and lose. He claimed it had never happened before.

Further explaining his exchange with Fognini, Murray stated: “Fabio wanted to engage with me. I probably shouldn’t have done, but I am not having him talk to me like that on court."
