Dembele Receives 2-Match Ban, To Miss El Clasico

Jayfred Ugo

Barcelona winger, Ousmane Dembele, is set to miss the first leg of the Clasico meeting with Real Madrid.

He was handed a domestic two-match suspension for his foul comments towards the center referee, Mateu Lahoz, who officiated the La Liga match between the defending champions, Barcelona and Sevilla, on Sunday, October 6.

Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi, and head coach, Ernesto Valverde, rose to the defence of the 22-year-old Frenchman, stating that the former Borussia Dortmund player could not speak Spanish well, so he did not carefully select the words he used for the referee. As a result, they asked that Dembele's punishment be reduced.

The Spanish Football Federation is yet to receive any appeal. As such, they have upheld a two-game ban. This implies that Dembele will miss the next two Barcelona league matches against Eibar and Real Madrid. The charges are, however, subject to appeal from the Catalans club.

Dembele has been having a slow start to life in Spain, as his career has been hindered by numerous injuries. His two-match ban is now the latest setback in the 22-year-old’s Barcelona career.

It is a fact that the Barcelona star is yet to ignite his fire since moving from Dortmund in the summer of 2017 for a massive fee of €105 million (Euros).
