The Catalans giants fell to a final minutes 3-2 loss to rivals, Atletico Madrid in the semi-final stage of the Spanish Supercopa after throwing away the lead.

Lionel Messi was left looking like a dejected figure after his side made series of "childish mistakes" in the match as they crashed out of the Supercopa.

The Spanish football federation held the first-ever new-look of Supercopa competition in Saudi Arabia between the top 3 teams of the La liga, and the winner of the Copa Del Rey. This year's teams includes Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Valencia.

Valencia already lost 3-1 to Real Madrid and now Barcelona has lost 3-2 to Diego Simeone's men. Atletico will go on to face city rivals, Real Madrid, in the final on Sunday while Barca prepare for an early flight home, to the evident displeasure of their captain.

Messi who spoke to Jeddah reporters, had this to say concerning the match,

"It is a shame, we played a great game, after so long we felt good again, we were in control, dominated and attacked all the time,

"We let it slip through certain mistakes when [Atletico] were already almost dead, in less than 10 minutes they turned round a game that we should have seen out.

"It hurts because it is a title and we wanted to be in the final and win it, we showed a different side to what we have been showing recently against Espanyol and at the end of last year, we played a good game but sadly we couldn't get the victory.

"We have taken a step forward today despite the defeat but we are aware that we have not been doing things the way we want, we do not want to make these childish mistakes again."
