North London club, Tottenham, have confirmed the arrival of Benfica midfielder, Gedson Fernandes, on an initial 18-month loan deal.

The deal comes with an option to make the Fernandes' switch permanent for a fee reported to be in the region of £65m in the summer of 2021.

The 21-year-old was linked with a move to a rival English Premier League club, West Ham, at the beginning of the transfer window, but the Benfica youngster turned down the Hammers deal to join Tottenham.

Fernandes is Jose Mourinho’s first official signing since becoming Tottenham's manager. He is also looking to sign at least one striker to cover-up for Harry Kane, who is out for the rest of the season due to an ankle injury. AC Milan forward, Piatek, tops the Portuguese’ list for replacement.

Fernandes completed his Tottenham medical on Monday, the 21-year-old will be looking to bolster the club's midfield options.

Fernandes has had very little playing time for Benfica since breaking into the first team last season with just 13 league appearances for the Primeira Liga side.
