Berbatov: Lukaku Worth More To United Than Just Goals

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov insists Romelu Lukaku is worth more than goals for Jose Mourinho’s side.

The Belgian scored in United’s 4-1 win against Fulham to end his Old Trafford drought which had lasted 997 minutes.

Lukaku also had a barren spell where he failed to find the back of the net in seven games before netting twice in his last three.

But Berbatov who lined of for the Reds between 2008 to 2012 believes he needs better supply from his team-mates.

Speaking in an interview on Sky Sports, the ex-Bulgaria defended the 25-year-old, saying he’s worth more than goals.

“Why do people concentrate on this [goalscoring drought]?

“Strikers are more than just goals now. How is that going to help Lukaku when there are constantly people saying how long he didn’t score a goal for.

“It is important and I am sure he had that relief ‘it is finally over’. People always talking about him not scoring is just spreading negativity. People always talking about him not scoring is just spreading negativity.”

The Belgian is often criticized for his first touch but Berbatov believes the services have not just be good enough.

“He knows all this,” he added. “He is probably going home and saying to himself ‘I cannot believe I didn’t score again, people are going to be on my back.’ How is that going to affect his self-confidence? It is low.

“People think he does not want to score, but that is wrong of course.

“I like him a lot, because he is good on the ball, he is powerful, but he needs team-mates around him who understand his quality, and know how to pass him the ball.

“If Lukaku is not as good as others with his first touch, then give him a ball that he can handle.”
